Do
teachers require a physical examination once they arrive in China? |
 |
Teachers
coming to China for the first time do not need a medical. Those who
have been in China for over a year have to have the exam. And this
is performed in Guangzhou at the Shamian clinic. It takes about one
hour and the cost is reimbursed by us. Two passport photos are needed
for the exam. |
 |
What
happens when teachers first arrive? |
 |
Our
staff members will greet new teachers at the airport train station
or bus station when they arrive. They are then taken to the apartment
complex where they are to live. They spend the next day or two relaxing
and getting to know their environment. After the rest period, all
teachers participate in an orientation session. During this session,
new teachers are introduced to the program and the schools. They are
also given their final contract to sign and Visa procedures are taken
care of. Orientation is, at minimum, one week long, and teachers are
paid for attending. |
 |
Do
you train your teachers? |
 |
During
all teachers' first several days, they participate in an orientation
seminar, where they learn different techniques for conducting a lesson
and managing a class. They even get the opportunity to observe classes,
either in the classroom or on video. After they begin teaching, the
training continues in other forms. There are weekly meetings led by
senior, experienced teachers and occasional workshops on games, phonics
and other topics. |
 |
What
resources do you have available for teachers to use? |
 |
We
supply every teacher with the following teaching materials: textbooks,
activity books, teacher's manuals, cassettes, cassette player, picture
cards, and other teaching guides such as master lesson plans. We also
have computers, with internet access, and photo copy machines in our
office. There are also wall charts, additional visuals, teaching aids
and which teachers may borrow. |
 |
Do
teachers have a Chinese teaching assistant? |
 |
Every
teacher is provided with a local teaching assistant. They all speak
English and help the teacher with conducting the lesson. They also
help out through general administrative support, contact with students'
parents, and translation of communication booklets and end-of- term
report cards to parents. |
